Busy Day

It was a busy day with cleaning and baking and other things one has to do everyday in the house. But I did have some time for crocheting............I always MAKE time for crocheting! I'm adding the last round of the granny squares, and then I will be ready to sew them together.

I ordered that Vintage Popcorn Granny Afghan pattern yesterday and I can't wait to get it. I'm also watching ebay to get an afghan hook so I can start working on the pattern from the charts since they are mostly made with the afghan stitch. I'm also looking into software that could help me design my own patterns........that's something I'd really like to try.

Well, my free time is here, and I'm sure you can guess what I'll be doing with that free time!

Happy Crocheting!

Preparing...

I'm preparing to get started on my baby afghan from a chart. I needed an afghan hook which is different than a regular crochet hook. It's a crochet hook with the end looking like a knitting needle. This is needed to do the afghan stitch which is required for the charting afghans. So, I looked on-line, and I'm watching a couple of hooks on ebay. One auction will be over in 10 hours....so we'll see how that goes. I also ordered a pattern from maggies pattern site:
http://www.maggiescrochet.com/pages/Afghans/afghan_page5.htm
I ordered the popcorn granny square pattern for a friend of mine that saw it and loves it. She has no idea that I'm making it for her birthday in May. Whenever I mention that I'm looking for a new pattern to work on, she always brings up that pattern because she thinks it's beautiful and that I'd be able to sell it on my site. I can't wait to make it and ship it out to her!!! But first things first...I will buy the yarn I need for that baby afghan fromt he charts on Wednesday and Thursday. Hopefully shortly thereafter, I will get the afghan hook, and then I can get started.

But, I am still working on the poncho. I finished the front last night and will continue working on it today. The pattern that I'm using as a reference said it was sized for an 8 year old...but as I was working on it...it looked small, so I thought I'd be able to give it to my niece's 3 year old..but once I had the front done...it really does look too big for a 3 year old....so, I will add it to my
Afghans -n- More site where I sell items that I make.

Laid to Rest

I sewed 4 strips of the rose/hexagon afghan together and realized it would be too bulky if I continued to make it a full sized afghan. The roses are big and it's just too much. So, I left it as is, with the 4 strips and will used it for a lapghan, or even a "shoulderghan" as my son named it.

So, now I'm on to other things. I've decided since I have some of the yarn left over from that afghan, I would use it for something else. I've been wanting to make a poncho, and saw a pattern that was a poncho made from granny squares. So, that is what I'm doing. They are small granny squares (about 3.5") and are purple, sherbert and white. I will just make a small one to fit my niece's daughter who's 3. The colors are really pretty together...I'll take a picture of it when I'm done.

While doing that, I've been looking at patterns again (my favorite pastime), and came across the pattern I want to make for that same niece who is having another girl. It's made from a chart which will be the first time I attempt that. It's a bear holding a balloon and it says "It's a Girl". The site I found the pattern on is the previous post. I will go get the yarn for that when I'm done with the poncho. I can't wait to get started on it! I will keep you posted!

Jackpot

I hit the jackpot for patterns from charts. I've never made a pattern from a chart, but have always wanted to try. During one of my search sessions, I came across a site that had loads of patterns with charts. I want to try every single one of them!!!!! If you want to check them out, go to: http://www.geocities.com/ldiznemom/counts.html

What a cool site that is. I'm still working on my rose/hexagon afghan. I will probably put that on my Afghans -n- More site. Once that afghan is done.......I'm not sure what to do next.

I want to make a poncho, but I also want to try one of the patterns from that site I just mentioned. Oh, what to do!!!!! I also saw a sock pattern that I printed out and want to try, and I also want to make some hats.........

Well, I'll keep pondering my choices while I finish my rose afghan...I have about two more strips to do, and then I'm done. The cable knit afghan is a scrap yarn afghan, so I will do that in-between my other projects. No big hurry to get that one done.

No Shortage of Patterns

There is absolutely no shortage of patterns out there in the world wide web! You can find a pattern for just about anything you want to make, and my list of things I want to make just keeps growing and growing.

I could (and have) sit for hours on end just looking through all the pattern sites out there. I look forward to retirement just because I want to have more time to crochet!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I actually do think I'm obsessed! I tell friends and family when they ask me what they could get me for Christmas or my birthday..........I always say, "I could always use yarn"..."just buy me yarn". That's all I ever want coz I know for sure it'll get used. And I love to go to Michaels and look at all the different yarns they have and imagine things I could make with all the different yarns.

These days, the fun fur yarn seems to be a bit thing, so I found the cutest pattern for a baby's sweater/jacket made with fun fur. I HAVE to make this. If you want to check it out, it's
http://extrastellar.net/cjs_crochetedfunfurjacket.html

In the meantime, I will head back to the couch and work on the roses and cable knit afghans. Those have to get done before I start on anything else.

Happy Crocheting!

Thinking...

I'm thinking of making a "learn to knit" video also. I find knitting was a bit harder for me to learn than crocheting, so it might be of use for those just starting out with knitting to learn from a close up video. Knitting takes more time than crocheting which is why crocheting is my favorite. It seems the work goes faster. But on the other hand, there are just some things that look nicer when knitted. Knitted things are a little more "flexible" than the crocheted things since crocheted items are a little more "stiff". But, I love to do them both. I decided that I would have a couple of project going at the same time. One crochet project and one knit project. This way, I can enjoy both instead of waiting for one project to be done before I start another one.

On the crochet video, I taught how to make a washcloth and a scarf, and I'm thinking that those are great things to start with on the knitting video too. Yeah, I think that's a good idea!

Last night I worked on my rose/hexagon afghan, made about 6 more hexagons. I finished one strip of the cabled knit afghan, and I may work on another strip of that tonight for variety. The strip I finished is pink, I will work on a blue one tonight.

This is a good site to get free patterns, I got some good ones from here, you just have to register: http://www.freepatterns.com/index.html

The beginning....

I remember when I was 6 years old, visiting my grandmother in Denmark. Sitting on her couch, she was teaching me the art of knitting. She made beautiful sweaters without patterns! She would sit and knit (not even looking at the work) and make these lovely sweaters from her head. Well, I wanted to do that. I couldn't imagine making these nice things from balls of yarn.

So, from the age of 6, I was knitting. But, being a little kid, I had other things I wanted to be doing like going outside and playing. I would see my mother knitting while watching t.v., making blankets, and I wanted to do that too. So, when I was 15, I asked my mother to teach me to make an afghan. I made my very first afghan then for my bed, in my purple room. Purple was my favorite color at the time, and I made my afghan purple and white. I have that afghan to this day......32 years later, and will never part with it!

But somewhere during that time, I also decided I wanted to learn crocheting. I made scarves, and blankets......but they were with the simple basic stitches. I would see these beautiful afghans and sweaters and other things that could be made with other stitches that I didn't know how to do. Well, after years of seeing these beautiful things, and still crocheting the same ol' thing, I decided I'd have to learn how to read patterns and how to make the difficult and "special" stitches. I had to stop being intimidated by the patterns. So, I picked up a more difficult pattern and slowly learned more difficult stitches. I had done this before, but always gave up when I couldn't figure out how to do the stitches after trying time after time. Frustration got the best of me. But when I was bored with doing the same things all the time, I figured I'd have to have patience and keep trying, no matter how many times I'd have to tear something apart, or how many times I'd have to try a stitch til I got it right.

It's so hard to understand how to do something with a picture...and that's why I made my "Learn to crochet" video. It's located at www.learn-crochet-now.com It shows first hand, how to hold the hook, how to make the stitches and where to place the stitches. It's something I wish I had when I was first learning to crochet...and I wanted to make it easier for other beginner crocheters.

I look back and don't know why I found it so hard because now, it's the easiest thing for me. I don't have problems reading and following the patterns. And I can make beautiful things.

Now I'm always making things for my family for holidays, birthdays and whatever other reasons I can come up with to make something. I'm so happy now that my nieces are old enough to be having babies. I've made baby blankets, clothes, stuffed toys.

There are soooo many patterns out there, I just want to make every single one of them. I actually seriously thought about making every afghan I see just to make it. What I would do with it, I didn't know. Then someone mentioned to me, "why don't you sell your stuff"? That's when Afghans -n- More was born. You can see some of the stuff I've made at www.afghansnmore.com So, whenever I make something, I just put it on my site. If someone buys one, fine, if not....I have alot of great stuff that I can be proud of.

Right now, I'm trying my hand at my own creation. It's a rose/hexagon afghan. It's a rose on a hexagon. I was trying to make it on a square, but it came out a hexagon instead and thought that would look pretty good. It's a beautiful peach color with white. I'm very anxious to see how it comes out.

I also started knitting a "cabled" afghan to use up some of my scrap yarn. I sure have enough of it... :) Hopefully tomorrow I will figure out how to get pictures up and get a picture of the rose/hexagon, and a strip of the cabled afghan. Now when I get bored with the roses, I switch to the knitted afghan.

So many things to make, so little time!!!
